When focusing on personal development, we go through many changes. By reflecting back on where we were in the past, we can see how far we have come and realize the goals we have accomplished.

I decided to do something a little different for today’s post and write a letter to my past self. Writing this letter made me see that I have accomplished so much more than I have ever thought.

Dear Paul,

I know that you are going through tough times. It can certainly be a scary world to live in when you are just going through the motions each and every day. Right now, I know that you are living each week to just get to the next. As hard as you try, being able to manage your finances is a struggle. You are stuck in a job you hate which is effecting more than just your work life. It is effecting your home life, your family life and self-esteem. I am writing this letter to you to tell you one simple truth; it’s all going to be ok.

When stuck on a dreary path, it is very hard to see the light, even on the little things. I know that you are wondering, what is it all for? When will this daily struggle end? I want you to know that before you know it, your life will be changed for the better. How do I know, you ask? Well, I am you writing this after all and I know because I am living it.

Paul, my word of advice to you right now is to just keep going. There are so many wonderful things that you have coming your way. It can be overwhelming to see the debt that you are paying off. I am going to be honest with you. Your future self is still working on it. The good thing is that since you have come so far from where you are now financially and personally, the debt that is being worked on is not going to be as big of a struggle. Sure it is still there, but you and Cryssie are going to be able to manage it just fine.

One of the many reasons that you have to just keep going is because a few years down the line, you are going to remember how you are feeling today. This is not going to be for the purpose of your past to haunt you, it will be for the wonderful purpose of learning just how far you have come.

We all have obstacles in life. Some are much more difficult to overcome than others. There are going to be bumps in the road and there are going to be mistakes made. The good side of this though is that it is because of these bumps and mistakes that make you who you are today; the person who is sitting here on this sunny, March day writing this to you. When times get really tough (and there are going to be some great struggles), keep your eye on what you are fighting for.

In times like the ones you are going though now, it can help to have some motivation. Something inspiring to look to. On your path to where you are going, Paul, you are going to achieve some awesome accomplishments. You are going to get out of that position at work that you hate. You are going to move into a new role and you are going to find that things are not so bad. You are going to move into a nicer house and have a place to raise your family.

Then, one day is going to come when you realize that you have been putting your own development on pause for many years. You are going to come to a point where you realize that you need to make a change. You are going to starting reading and listening to many things on personal development and finance. You are even going to start your own blog to have a place to unload all of those thoughts in your head. Yes, yes, I know that right now you are laughing at the thought of a blog. But let me tell you, it is going to happen and it will make all the difference. Writing your thoughts for the world to see is going to give you relief. Not just because you took a step to better yourself, but also because in doing so you are going to find a whole community of other people who share your interests and who are going to support you and Cryssie along the way.

What you will soon find to be amazing, is that as soon as you begin sharing your thoughts and your story, you will become even more interested in your personal development. You are going to take action on it as well. You are going to start educating yourself, you are going to start helping others and you are going to have so much less stress. It is going to be amazing. You are going to discover that when you make a plan and execute it, your goals can be achieved. I am happy to tell you, your future self already has a plan in place to be able to achieve your goals and your debt payoff.

So Paul, I hope that these words find you well. They may be hard to believe given the situation you are in now, but I can assure you they are true. I mean, come on, would your future-self lie to you? Not a chance. So just keep on keepin’ on and you will have some great things ahead.

Sincerely,

Your future self
