If you are reading this blog, you may be thinking to yourself “who in the world is this guy and how does he even know what he’s talking about”. That is a very valid question and I don’t blame you for thinking it. After all, this is finance I am discussing here. Finance is something we all have in common. Finance is something that impacts each and every one of our lives day in and day out. I am just getting started in finance. I am a newbie. When I learn new personal finance info, I am very interested to learn more, ask questions and look for reasoning. In all honesty, this blog has two purposes. The first is hold myself accountable with my learning; to be my personal journal of my journey. The second purpose is to help one person who may be wondering about finance like I was. If I only reach one person, mission accomplished.

In actuality, I started in finance on accident as you may have read in my “My Story – How I Started in the World of Finance” post. The reason I am pursuing it is because it is much more than just an interest; it’s becoming a passion. In fact, I have also applied to go back to school to study finance and pursue certifications.

In the future, I have a goal of starting a career in finance or accounting. On the side, I would also like to start as a financial planner. Currently I am working to become debt free. I have a ways to go, but I want to use my experience and knowledge to help other people who are in a financial situation that they feel they cannot get out of. I also want to help people with their financial planning and to help them achieve their life dreams. (Yes, I know, that last one may have sounded a little too Hallmark-ish.) I want to be able to learn the things I need to know in order to help my kids and, one day, grandkids so that the education of finance can last for generations.

This blog is my starting point. It is my outlet to express my ideas and maybe even get some feedback. I believe that in order to be successful in finance, you need share your thoughts and be open to what others share as well. This is because there is not only one correct way to do things, there are tons. By getting into the world of finance, I can learn more about something that will impact me for the rest of my life, I can share what I learn so that maybe I can impact other people’s lives and I can gain knowledge that will not be obsolete in the foreseeable future, but will be impactful for generations to come.

So, once again, why am I starting in the world of finance? Because it’s a new passion I’ve found. Is there a chance that I will fall flat on my face through this journey? Absolutely. But you know what? I started. I may fall a thousand times, and that’s ok. When I do, I will pick myself up and keep going (don’t worry, when it happens I will be sure to blog about it). So here I go. Let’s do this. I am going to pursue my passion and see where it leads me. It may end up leading me somewhere that is not in the plan, but that’s ok too. In my mind, by simply taking these steps, I am on the winning side of the battle to defeat normal.

I am always open to your questions, comments, thoughts and status on your financial journey. I would love to hear from you in the comments below or you can reach out to me at defeatingnormal@gmail.com.

  1. Hi there! As a new bloggers here (Mr. Adventure Rich and I), we felt the same way! Why would anyone read OUR blog when there are so many out there?
We also feel like this is our “passion project”. It is an opportunity for us to share/pressure test ideas, explore options and learn from our past.
    Good luck with your blogging!
