notebook

Happy Wednesday! I have not posted here is over a week due to being on a family vacation. My wife and I have been planning a getaway for a few months now. No matter your financial situation, everyone needs to getaway once in a while to re-charge the batteries. She was able to find some incredible deals that saved us tons and was able to make this trip even possible. I will save these details for a future post and explain some great ways to have an awesome vacation even while working to pay off debt.

Today this post is a little bit off topic of finance, but has everything to do with improving your life (at least a small aspect of it anyway). Have you ever had a moment when a totally random thought just popped into your mind? Sometimes out of nowhere? Or perhaps something you see or something you hear someone say triggers an idea, maybe even un-related? It happens to me all the time! I will be sitting at work, doing my everyday tasks when all of a sudden it hits me! “I think I’m going to research such and such topic on my financial journey” or “I think I’ll write about X next week on my blog”. One hour later, I am scratching my head trying to recall the great, fabulous idea I just had. This ever happen to anyone else? I find myself a lot like Dory from “Finding Nemo”…what was I just saying?

At the start of 2017, I decided that I need to keep myself more organized. I started it as a New Year’s resolution. At first I started using my phone to keep track of things. I was at my desk at work one day, entering a bunch of different tasks, events and ideas into my phone. Then I realized that this method was not the best for me. All of a sudden, another lightbulb turns on over my head. I thought to myself, I should start writing things down more. Actually physically writing them down. This will help me to remember more, right?

In order to keep my resolution, that day after work, I stopped at the store on my way home and purchased a small notebook. Ironically enough, I do remember thinking that this will certainly help me to stay more organized.

Day after day, I brought this notebook to work with me. Every time I would have a random thought, I would quickly scribble it down. After a while, I realized that in order to keep myself organized by writing stuff down, I need to keep my notebook organized as well. This is when I started to create sections to keep everything neat. I have different sections for so many things; goals, accomplishments, books I have read this year, books I want to read and so much more. In fact, this notebook is what helped me to start this blog. Each day I would think of different topics to write about. And you know where they went? You guessed it, their own section in the notebook.

Ok, so maybe I am a bit of a nerd. That’s ok. This is one of the ways I am defeating normal. The point here is that I found a system to keep me organized. I found a way to allow myself to keep track of ideas I have, goals I want to keep and the progress on each one. I also use this to jot down quotes I hear on podcasts or read in books or articles. I have amazed myself with just how much clear my head is now that I can keep track of thoughts on paper. With everything being much more organized, guess what? My financial records are more organized as well.

If you find that you’re having a hard time staying organized and keeping track of thoughts and ideas, give this a try. Let me know how it goes.  Although it has only been a few months, this notebook that seemed silly to me at first, now serves a great purpose in my life.

  1. The notebook is a good idea. I keep paper and a pen by my bed to jot down ideas as they come to me. Otherwise we may forget them, right? I hope you had a nice vacation 🙂

    1. Absolutely. Especially after starting this blog. Ideas seem to come out of no where and having a place to write them down keeps me organized. The vacation was awesome…and much needed!
